History

    Quick answer

Every roll is random and fair, using your browser's secure random number generator. Choose how many dice and which type (d4 to d100), add a modifier and press Roll.

How to use the Dice Roller

    1. Choose how many dice to roll and the dice type (d6 is the standard six-sided die).
    2. Optionally add a modifier, such as +3 for a character bonus in tabletop RPGs.
    3. Click Roll or press Space/Enter while the button is focused.
    4. Your dice, their total and a roll history appear below.

    Example

    In Dungeons & Dragons, a fireball deals 8d6 damage. Choose 8 dice, d6, and roll: you get 3, 6, 1, 4, 4, 5, 2 and 6 for a total of 31. For an attack roll of d20 + 5, choose 1 die, d20 and a modifier of 5.

    How it works

Each die is rolled with your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, so every face has exactly the same probability: 1 in 6 for a d6, 1 in 20 for a d20. Results are independent, so a previous roll never affects the next.

Notation used in games: NdX + M means “roll N dice with X sides and add M”. For example, 2d6 + 1 gives results between 3 and 13.

    Dice odds worth knowing

    • Rolling a 6 with one die: 1 in 6 (16.7%). With two dice, at least one 6 comes up 11 times in 36 (30.6%).
    • Two dice totaling 7: the most common total, 1 in 6. Totals of 2 or 12 come up only 1 in 36.
    • Natural 20: on a d20 it's always 5%, no matter what you rolled before.
    • Advantage in D&D: rolling two d20 and keeping the higher raises the average from 10.5 to about 13.8.

    Frequently asked questions

    Are online dice fair?

Yes. This roller uses a cryptographically secure random number generator, which is as fair as (or fairer than) physical dice, which can have small imperfections.

What is the most common total with two dice?

    7. There are six combinations that make 7 (1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, 6+1) out of 36, a probability of 1 in 6.

    What is a d100?

A percentile die, giving a number from 1 to 100. In tabletop games it's often rolled as two d10s: one for tens and one for units.

Can I roll different dice types at once?

Roll each type separately; the history keeps every result so you can add them up.
