Quick answer

6-7 clicks per second (CPS) is average, 8-10 is fast and over 10 usually needs jitter or butterfly clicking. CPS = clicks ÷ seconds.

How to use the Click Speed Test (CPS)

  1. Choose a duration. 5 seconds is the most common test.
  2. Click inside the colored box to start. The timer begins with your first click.
  3. Keep clicking as fast as you can until the timer reaches zero.
  4. Your clicks per second (CPS) and rating appear. Wait a moment, then click again to retry.

Example

In a 5-second test you click 38 times: 38 ÷ 5 = 7.6 CPS. That's above average for normal clicking. Using jitter clicking (tensing your arm so your finger vibrates) players often reach 10-14 CPS, and butterfly clicking (alternating two fingers) can reach 15-20 CPS.

How it works

The test counts every click on the box between your first click and the end of the timer, then divides by the duration:

CPS = clicks ÷ seconds

Longer tests give lower but more realistic results, because fatigue sets in. Short 1-second tests are mostly about burst speed.

Some gaming servers limit or flag very high click rates, so check the rules before using special techniques.

Click faster without hurting your hand

  • Warm up: do two or three 5-second rounds before trying for a record.
  • Grip: a relaxed claw grip lets your finger move freely. A tight palm grip slows it down.
  • Mouse matters: light mice with low-travel switches allow higher CPS. Very old or heavy mice often feel “mushy”.
  • Take breaks: jitter clicking strains the forearm. Stop at the first sign of pain or tingling.
  • Check your mouse: if your score is suspiciously high, the mouse may be double-clicking by itself. Run the mouse tester to make sure.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CPS?

Most people click 6-7 times per second. 8-10 CPS is fast, and above 10 usually requires techniques like jitter or butterfly clicking.

What is jitter clicking?

Tensing the muscles in your arm and hand so your finger vibrates rapidly on the mouse button. It's fast but tiring; take breaks to avoid strain.

What is butterfly clicking?

Alternating two fingers on the same mouse button. Each finger adds clicks, so rates of 15-20 CPS are possible.

Does my mouse affect my CPS?

Yes. Light switches and short travel help. Some mice also register double clicks on a single press (a fault). Use our mouse tester to check for that.

Is high clicking bad for my hands?

Long sessions of extreme clicking can strain your hand and wrist. Keep tests short, take breaks and stop if you feel pain.
